Alumni Testimonies
God used Phi Lamb in an unbelievable way to shape me in my college years. I had no idea what I was in for when I joined as a sophomore! God gave me an amazing group of gals to laugh, cry, pray and play with … I could not have dreamed up a more abundant college experience for myself and most of that was due to how God used Sigma Phi Lambda and the gals I met through that organization in my life. I began to learn how to lead, how to pray, how to study the Word, how to live the abundant life. Phi Lamb was a catalyst to my walk with the Lord in college and I am thoroughly grateful for those years. I am so grateful, too, for the other gals who came alongside of me, challenged me and loved me well as we all experienced the ups and downs of college life together. My walk with the Lord is a dynamic and continual journey, and those few years in Phi Lamb were HUGE in spurring on my growth at such a vital time. God is good - all the time. All the time - God is good. - Rachel Wolters Shelton
There is nothing sweeter than the fellowship of Christian sisters. Phi Lamb served an amazing purpose in my life by offering me this great group of women to grow with and learn from. Oh yeah, and we had a lot of fun as well!!! I’ll always treasure my Phi Lamb experiences and I will continue to cherish and adore my friendships. - Katheryn Bell
Phi Lamb has filled a gap in my life that I never knew I had…..the friendships of Godly women. When Sigma Phi Lambda first started in 1988 I remember being exposed to women of different religious backgrounds from myself. It was eye opening for me and showed me how great the kingdom of God is. I have laughed, cried, feared, prayed, studied, sang, been silent, and learned from and with these other women. I never knew such friendship and still consider it one of my greatest joys. I remember retreats that turned into all night slumber parties. I remember parties with BYX where we danced for hours. I remember dorm prayer groups after lunch (those gave me the courage to pray out loud). I remember seeing my sisters on campus and feeling happy to know another person who I connected with and could trust. I remember doing the very first ever engagement circle and everyone screaming when I blew out the candle. I remember sorority picnics before Texas football games with our dates and parents. I remember performing the Carmen song “I still believe” at a party with Bonnie, Jennifer and Julie. Yikes! I remember initiations, weddings, couples showers, and baby showers. I am so thankful to God for allowing me to be a part of His wonderful plan. - Deanna Kotrla, Sigma Phi Lambda 1988

Joining Phi Lamb
Is there a chapter of Phi Lamb on my campus?
Check out our list of current chapters and see if there is a chapter near you!
How can I join an existing chapter?
It is easy to join the chapter at the campus you are attending! Use the link to the chapter websites to help you find your university’s chapter. Most chapters hold Rush in the fall and spring semesters. Any woman who participates in Rush, meets the requirements for membership, and chooses to join Phi Lamb is welcome to join. “We don’t choose you, you choose us.”
From the Sigma Phi Lambda Constitution, Article IV
Any female student is eligible for membership of Sigma Phi Lambda. No individual will be refused membership on the grounds of race, national origin, age, disability, appearance, social status, or religion. Because of the nature and purpose of Sigma Phi Lambda, the organization reserves the right to gender discriminate and limit membership to females only. Each Sigma Phi Lambda chapter is ensured this right to gender discriminate under a federal group exemption, section 501(c)7.
At the beginning of a semester, potential members will be introduced to Sigma Phi Lambda during a week of rush. With the guidance of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, the officers will interview each potential member, questioning each one about their desire to grow in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The potential member will then decide whether or not Sigma Phi Lambda is right for them. The new members will serve one semester of pledge-ship. At the end of that semester, the pledges will be initiated into the sorority and assume full membership.
Starting A New Chapter of Phi Lamb
Don’t have a chapter of Phi Lamb at your school? Ask God if He would want Phi Lamb to be a part of your campus. Perhaps He is calling you or another lady at your school to start a chapter at your university. Only He knows!

Who “runs” Phi Lamb?
Board of Directors
Phi Lamb is governed by a Board of Directors. Seven alumna from various chapters help keep things running smoothly.
Regional Directors
The Regional DIrectors oversee the administration of each chapter.
Executive Director
This is the person you work with if you’d like to start a chapter of Phi Lamb. The “ED” also helps keep things running by assisting the Board of Directors with daily tasks and she helps plan the annual Officer Training Conference.
Alumni Councils
After a chapter has been established long enough to have alumni, an Alumni Council is formed. These three members can be former elected officers of that chapter. The Alumni Council provides guidance to the chapter and assistance to the Board of Directors representative.
Officers
Five officers are elected yearly in each chapter. The offices are President, Vice President, Chaplain, Secretary, and Treasurer. These officers maintain the daily functions and lead the members of their chapter.
Actives
These members of Phi Lamb are considered the big sisters of their chapter. They hold voting rights and are privilege to appointed officers positions that vary from chapter to chapter.
Pledges
New to Phi Lamb, these members are the little sisters. They are cherished by their big sisters and a vital part of Phi Lamb. Upon initiation into the sorority, they are able to vote and become Actives.
How much are dues?
There is one steadfast rule about dues in Phi Lamb. Dues never exceed the cost of 3 credit hours of tuition at a local state school in your state. Dues are set by each individual chapter of Phi Lamb. Some chapters are $200 a semester, some are $100. It truly is decided through prayer and by determining the needs of each individual chapter.
What are the membership requirements?
Sorority members may be classified as pledge, active, inactive, or alumni.
Pledges become active members through our initiation ceremony at the end of the pledge semester/year.
In order to be a pledge , she must abide by the following standards (unless some specific situation arises and is approved by her chapter officers).
- She must be under the covering of or seeking a church home.

- She must attend 80% of active and pledge meetings.
- She must pay semester dues to Sigma Phi Lambda.
- She must attend the pledge retreat.
- She must attend any chapter retreats.
- She must attend Sigma Phi Lambda prayer once a week. “Devote yourselves to prayer being watchful and thankful” Col. 4:2-7.
- She must fulfill her service requirement.
In order to be an active member must abide by the following standards (unless some specific situation arises and is approved by the appropriate officer).
- She must be under the covering of or seeking a church home.
- She must be actively involved in a Bible study. Sorority meetings do not provide adequate study of the scriptures necessary for Christian growth.

- She must attend Sigma Phi Lambda prayer once a week.
- She must fulfill her service requirement
- She must be present 3 of the 4 days of rush, one being the final day of rush.
Actives may be suspended by a majority vote of the officers after much prayer and movement by the Lord. An active member may choose to go inactive. Under such circumstances the above rules do not apply to her. She may not participate in closed activities; however she is welcome to resume her active status for a later semester.
Constitution of Sigma Phi Lambda, rev. 2008
If I transfer to another campus, can I transfer my membership to another chapter?
Transferring to another chapter is very simple. You’ll need a letter from your current chapter stating your membership status, signed by the current officers and addressed to the officers of the chapter to which you will be transferring. Talk to your chapter officers for more information about this procedure.
Can a person of any denomination join Phi Lamb? Is Phi Lamb non-denominational?
Phi Lamb welcomes Christ-following or Christ-seeking women from all Christian denominations. We base our organization and beliefs upon the word of God, the Bible.
Can Phi Lamb members be members of other sororities as well?
Many sororities will not allow for membership in sister organizations. However, Phi Lamb does not mind you being a member of another sorority or any other organization so long as you uphold your commitment to Sisters for the Lord.
If you are a member of another sorority and desire to become a member of Phi Lamb (or vice versa), be sure to check your requirements within the other sorority before making any commitments.
Do chapters of Phi Lamb have sorority houses?
None of our chapters have sorority houses. There are many reasons for this. First, our “permanent headquarters” is not a house, it is our Board of Directors. Second, Phi Lamb strives to include all women. Having a sorority house may limit membership for those women who are graduate students or married. Finally, the limitation on dues would make the financial aspects of obtaining and maintaining a house almost impossible while meeting the other goals of Phi Lamb.
Can married women be members of Phi Lamb?
Yes they can! Phi Lamb welcomes all Christ-following or Christ-seeking women from all life situations.
Board of Directors
The Board of Directors of Sigma Phi Lambda is made up of seven women from the various chapters who have a heart for Phi Lamb and its continuing ministry.
Ricci Allen, Alumni Relations Coordinator
Board Representative, Ricci lives in Texas. She oversees the chapter at the University of Texas.
Sarah Henze, Treasurer
Sarah oversees the chapter at Baylor University. Sarah was in UT Phi Lamb from 97-01 and had the pleasure to serve as Rush Captain, Favors Chair and Vice President. Since her days in Austin, Sarah has been busy… She graduated from grad school at Baylor a few years ago and moved up to Dallas for her dream job as a financial analyst at a Christian nonprofit.
As the youngest & only single board member, Sarah has lots of free time! She loves to shop, teaches 10th grade Sunday school, and can’t wait to starting traveling more. Her current long range project is transforming her apartment from college leftovers to Pottery Barn chic. She’d love to hear from you on Facebook, so look her up!
Favorite Things: Diet Dr. Pepper with vanilla, boys in pink dress shirts, and sleeping in on Saturdays. Pet peeves: Being bare foot, boys with no manners, and bad drivers.
Tobi McMillan, Chaplain
Tobi McMillan is the board representative for Stephen F. Austin University. She has been involved with Phi Lamb at Texas Tech since she pledged in 1992 and has loved every minute of it. As an active member she served as pledge trainer and chaplain and then served on the Alumni Council for the chapter from 2002 to 2006.
Tobi attended Tech for both her undergraduate and graduate work in Multidisciplinary Science. After graduating from Tech, she remained in Lubbock and taught high school science for nine years and then spent two years training both teachers and undergraduate students in science education. This year she is returning to her true passion of teaching high school; she will be teaching Senior Seminar, a course primarily geared toward preparing students for college and career options following high school. When she’s not doing Phi Lamb stuff or working, she loves to hang out with friends, read, write, travel, drink hot tea, and rollerblade.
Leslie Moore, Vice Treasurer
Hillarie Smith, Chairperson
Hillarie lives in Austin, TX. She oversees the chapter at Tarleton State University.
Hillarie graduated from Texas Tech University in 2001 with a Multi-Disciplinary Studies degree and taught middle school math for 3 years. She has been married to her husband, Donald, for seven years and they have two sons.

Hillarie has been involved with Phi Lamb since she pledged in 1998. She served as worship leader and chaplain while an active member of Phi Lamb, then served on Tech’s Alumni Council from 2002-2006. Phi Lamb has been a place of tremendous growth, encouragement, and friendship in her life. Some of her favorite things to do are: being outside with her family, spending time with people, serving where needed and swimming. She has a 5 year old son Cadence, 2 year old girl Greenley and an awesome husband Jason.
It is Cassie’s prayer that God will bless Phi Lamb, that it may grow, spread like fire and that MANY girls, for MANY generations, will be able to experience the sisterhood and fellowship that she did. She prays for Phi Lamb regularly and always looks forward to more candle lights being spread.
“Phi Lamb gave more to me then I will ever be able to give to it. Thank you so much for this amazing opportunity to serve you. Love & Light, Cassie”

Phi Lamb and Your Daughter
We are very excited that your daughter is considering membership in Sigma Phi Lambda! The purpose of Sigma Phi Lambda is to glorify Christ. At each campus, the women meet for worship, prayer, community service, accountability, fellowship, and ministry opportunities. Membership in Phi Lamb is much more than a social commitment. It means joining a sisterhood of women committed to growing in Christ and gaining a network of support and encouragement. There are many misconceptions about the idea of a Christian sorority. Since Phi Lamb exists for the purpose of bringing glory to Christ, all of our activities and programs strive to accomplish that purpose.
